Behind the Name

Formerly Longhorn Jean Company, Matt and Amanda Kimes first named their brand after their two longhorns, Betty and Barney—also the names of their original jean styles. After Betty’s passing and a polite nudge from a certain Texas university, they decided the name wasn’t worth the trouble.

They rebranded as LJC Apparel, which felt like progress, but it lacked connection to their core audience of cowboys and cowgirls. A short-lived switch to “Lonehorn Jeans,” in honor of Barney now flying solo, didn’t stick either.

After much thought, they landed on Kimes Ranch—a name that reflected their deep roots in the horse and cattle industry and the culture that shaped them. Both Matt and Amanda come from long lines of cattle ranchers, dairy farmers, bull riders, and horsemen. “Ranch” was a natural fit—not only was the business founded on their horse ranch in Rio Verde, Arizona, but that same property still serves as headquarters today. The word also spoke to their brand’s inclusive spirit—a place of gathering and community.

Kimes Ranch captured their family history and western heritage, as well as their shared success in AQHA and NRCHA competition, including multiple world titles. “I think this is the best name we’ve ever had,” says Matt Kimes. “Sure, it might get mispronounced, but one day it’ll be synonymous with quality and great-fitting jeans.”

A fitting name for a brand built on authenticity, growth, and a story worth telling.

The Beginning

With a dream to create THE jean that was missing from the western world, Matt and Amanda sourced every element of their production-finding the best team of cutters, sewers, and washers until their product was undeniably the best fit and quality. They created a jean versatile enough to crossover from western to everyday wear, with a medium waist line for women that allowed high enough coverage while riding, but low enough rise to mimic a fashionable street jean. Their men’s jean took on details that others had not considered, like a knife pocket and a more attractive back pocket placement.
