Gold Medal Dreams - An Interview With Jordi Evans

Gold Medal Dreams - An Interview With Jordi Evans

Jordi Edens rocked the breakaway world when she roped her calf in 2.58 seconds during the gold medal round of Days of 47 in Salt Lake City. Jordi is a 16 year old Texan who competes in not only breakaway but barrel racing and team roping as well. I was fortunate enough to be able to ask her a few questions about her amazing experience and what is was like to make history receiving the first ever gold medal in the breakaway roping.

Q: How did you qualify to rope at Days of 47?

A: I nominated 30-35 rodeos and jackpots in the WCRA that I went to. I was able to get enough points to qualify in the top 28 to go to the performances at Salt Lake.

Q: What was it like backing on the box for the first go? What about the medal round?

A: I was the very first girl out in the first performance, so I was just going to try and make a good run and get my first calf down and see what happened. In the gold medal I knew I could get fast so I tried to give myself the best start on the barrier and rope him fast.

Q: Tell me how your horse handled the atmosphere and set up?

A: She handled it a lot better than I expected. She's used to going to the amateur rodeos so she knows the atmosphere, but the crowd was loud and she stayed focused and worked really good.

Q: Your horse came from Jackie, tell me how she has impacted your roping.

A: Jackie has helped me so much. I practice with her a lot, she's always helping to find different things to work on and just trying to make me better. I don't think I would be in this position if it wasn't for her help.

Q: What was it like competing in the same arena as world champions?

A: I've always wanted to compete in the same arena as them! I look up to a lot of them and to be able to warm up with them and feel a part of something so big and awesome is super cool!

Q: What was it like standing there receiving the gold medal?

A:I didn't know what to do! That's one of the best feelings standing there as they put the gold medal on your neck! Highlight of my career by far!

Q: How does it feel to have made history in the breakaway?

A: It's crazy! I'm so blessed to be able to do what I do , and to be a 16 year old kid

Gold Medal Dreams

being the first one is so awesome! It's a pretty cool feeling to know my name will go down in the history books!

Q: What do you do outside of rodeo?

A:I like to play golf and wakeboard in my free time. I wouldn't consider it a hobby but I do try to work out almost every day with my trainer! It's helped me a lot with my roping.

Q: If you could have any super power what would it be?

A: I'd want to read people's minds!

Q: What is your favorite style of Kimes Ranch Denim?

A: I'd have to say the Jennifers!
